About IEC
The International Education College (IEC) is a special administrative and teaching institute responsible for the enrollment and administration of all international students , consisting of the Office of IEC and the Center for Chinese Studies (CCS), which is located in Dongming Campus with the administrative office and Teaching and Research Department.
According to the unified arrangements of the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Communication, in the early 1960s, Shanghai Maritime University began to receive foreign students. From 1962 to 1966, the school has accepted and trained 31 Vietnamese undergraduate students enrolled in Maritime management, Maritime Business, Maritime Organization and other fields. In 1996, SMU regained qualifications for recruiting privately financed international students and for teaching Chinese as a foreign language.
SMU offers undergraduate programs, master programs, doctorate programs, Chinese language programs, pre-degree program, summer school program, international class program and professional training program. In 2012, there are more than 600 international students from 40 countries or regions across the world, including about 100 degree students and more than 500 students in long-term and short-term non-degree programs . The college has a strong teaching faculty composed of more than 20 full-time and part-time Chinese language and Chinese culture teachers.
IEC is committed to increasing and establishing long-term, close exchanges and cooperation relations with overseas universities and attracting excellent international students to study in SMU. Since 2012, SMU is approved to accept the Chinese Government Scholarship students, which will be more conducive to promoting the process of internationalization of SMU.
About CCS
The Center for Chinese studies (CCS) is affiliated to International Education Institute of Shanghai Maritime University. Since 1996, we have offered training and education to thousands of students of all types. Significant teaching results had been achieved by pursuing the small-class teaching system. We trained civil servants from Burma. It took the 19 beginners less than 10 months to achieve a passing rate of 83% in HSK-6, with 2 of them passing HSK-8.The reputation of the Center prevails in Shanghai and even all over the country for its high-quality education.
While ensuring pedagogical quality, the center organizes activities aimed to develop students’ practical application of the language. Such activities include tours, International Cultural Festival, Dragon Boat rowing, Chinese writing contest, Chinese corner, all of which provide overseas students with opportunities to practice their Chinese and absorb Chinese culture.
The Center boasts its qualified and experienced teachers for Chinese studies. We now offer a complete list of courses, which include Long-Term Comprehensive Course, Long-Term Practical Course, Short-Term Practical Course and Short-Term Comprehensive Course.
